Fact of the Day: Francis City

The capital of New Mexico, Santa Fe means "holy faith" in Spanish. However Santa Fe's name was actually shortened as it was originally a town called "La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asís" which honored an old saint named Saint Francis of Assisi.

  1. Yeah a bit long for a city name, but sound good when you read it aloud! :-)

  4. For some reason, this brought to mind the conversation about San Diego from Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy.

Ron Burgundy: Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.
Veronica Corningstone: No, there's no way that's correct.
Ron Burgundy: I'm sorry, I was trying to impress you. I don't know what it means. I'll be honest, I don't think anyone knows what it means anymore. Scholars maintain that the translation was lost hundreds of years ago.
Veronica Corningstone: Doesn't it mean Saint Diego?
    Ron Burgundy: No. No.
Veronica Corningstone: No, that's - that's what it means. Really.
    Ron Burgundy: Agree to disagree.

  5. I've always been a fan of St Francis of Assisi even though it's pretty clear he was mentally ill. Still a spiritual genius though.

  9. Good thing they changed the name of the town, and St Francis still gets the headliner position.
