Question: Are You Afraid of the Ocean?

I'm not exactly afraid of the ocean, but I've never really swam in it. At the beach, I won't let the water go past my waist. I can't swim very well and I always thought it would be much harder to be rescued in the sea than a pool. I have been on a small boat ride from Charleston, SC to Fort Sumter and I was more sea-sick than nervous. Though I figured I'd be nervous about a real boat trip across a sea or ocean.

  2. I have a healthy respect for the ocean, especially after being caught in a typhoon in the Gulf of Alaska when i was convinced our ship was going to sink. I also have a healthy fear of sharks.

  4. When living in New York, my mother and I went to Bermuda by ship, if we had known about the Bermuda triangle, we wouldn't have gone. Then in the late 70s I crossed the Atlantic with my mother and grandmother from New York to Italy on the Michelangelo ship....what an adventure! It took two weeks. We loved it!

  6. I grew up in Redondo Beach, California and we used to go to the beach practically every weekend. I never swam in the water only let the water come up to my knee's. I have been to Big Bear lake and swam in that water but that's the biggest body of water I've ever been in.

  8. I have never been on a cruise, though everyone I know who has been on one has had a fantastic time. I just feel like I want to stay on land. I am, however, drawn to the water and love sitting on the beach looking at it. I am not a good swimmer either and found the surf a little too strong when I was in my husband's home town.

  9. I'm not afraid of water...but I sure don't want to get more than waist deep in the ocean. Did you see JAWS..??? that would make anyone afraid of the ocean. I've been on 2 cruises and didn't get one bit nervous...but since that ship turned over in Italy (Spain..??) and then so many sick on several cruise ships, I will give it a lot of thought before I go on another....

  11. Nah, no fear of it. But I'm wise to afford areas with sharks.

  13. I love being near the ocean but not necessarily in the middle of it. It is quite intimidating, and I respect its power.

  14. I'm not afraid of the ocean unless there's a tidal wave. I can't swim, so I have a respect for it.

  15. I think when one is in the middle of very rough open sea when land is not visible, it is not likely to not freak out even if one knows how to swim.
