Question: What Do You Call Soda?

I find some parts of languages to be fascinating, and English dialects are no different. I've always called drinks like Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper "soda". But the most popular one I hear is "pop" which is obviously derived from soda-pop. I've always disliked that word for soda, just never sounded right to me.

What do you call soda?

  8. I've been known to call mine several four letter words, when it opens and spews all over the counter. Mostly, I say soda. I think "Pop" referred to single bottles and the sound they'd make when the small metal caps would pop off. (grin)

  9. The most common term in Canada is "soft drink." Then probably "pop." We don't say "soda" a lot -- that's a real American word.

  10. In Australia, soft drink, but often brand names are used for more recently invented drinks. Never soda, except for proper soda water and the flavour creamy soda, and never pop.
