Question: Do You Go By Your Middle Name?

Daisy's parents are from Laos, so her first name is actually Ratsamy though Daisy is not a nick-name but her given middle name when she was born in Minnesota. I was always called Adam, but my middle name is Blair after my grandfather. I have a cousin named Blair, so that would have made things confusing. My brother Brandon goes by his middle name, as his first name is William. I never liked the idea of going by your middle name as it belittles your first. Sometimes it can't be helped but some people (like my parents with Brandon) do this with intention when they name their children. I let Daisy know early on that any children we may have would not have a Laotian name first, but rather it be their middle name.

Do you go by your first name or your middle name?

  1. I go by my middle name too! My first name is actually Maria but no one has ever called me that (even my parents) except my profs in university coz that's what my official records said:)

  4. I go by my first name. Great you agreed with Daisy beforehand on naming conventions. I have heard of a few couples where the husband said 'I don't want kids'...years after the wedding.

  14. I was wondering what Daisy's ethnic background was. I knew she had SE Asian roots but but didn't realize her ties were to Laos. I use my middle name Louise. My parents always planned to call me Louise, but felt that Myrtle Louise MacBeath flowed better than Louise Myrtle MacBeath. Of course every agency and computer now insists on using your first name, so I'm getting Myrtle all over the place. I hate Myrtle! So did my grandmother MacBeath who didn't like being called Myrtle either. I could have changed my first name when I became an American citizen, but I felt that would be disrespectful to my parents even though both of them were dead. Oh well, I've made peace with Myrtle. Think carefully before you name your kids; they have to live with your choices! Have a good one!

  15. I go by my first name...though my username on the chess server I play on is BethanyGrace, so that's almost going by both ;) Don't ever expect people to call me that though, as it would be a mouthful!

  17. I've never truly liked either my first or my middle names. However, I'm OK with my first now. We gave our kids English, Japanese and Hawaiian names, but they only used their English ones in the end. I was surprised when our daughter named our granddaughter a Hawaiian name and our son named our new grandson a Japanese name. Life can always surprise you.
