Fact of the Day: Draft Equality

Many countries in the world require their citizens to join the military for some period of time. Though historically, this has only been limited to men. However in countries such as Chad, Bolivia, North Korea, Mozambique, and Israel, women are expected to join the military unless they have a good reason like pregnancy or religious objection.

  1. I didn't know it was so many countries that expect women to join the military.

  2. North Korea - you jest!!!! - it is compulsory or the "re-education gulag".
You have left a lot of countries out - Switzerland - all men must do military training. Greece also.
Here in Australia - there are many women in all services and some hold high ranks - like Maj.General, Squadron Leaders and Naval Captains - and even higher ranks.

  4. Interesting. I'd heard of Switzerland.
I'm not sure how I feel about compulsory service for women.

    1. Men aren't required to join unless they start a draft for a major war. The military is not a fit for everyone, so I'd be very against it happening for either gender because we should have the freedom to enlist or not.

  6. I'd heard of Israel, but not the other countries. I agree with your comment above--would hate to see a draft again.
