Fact of the Day: Early Texas Oil

Spindletop hill is located near Beaumont, Texas where in 1901 someone found a large amount of crude oil. It produced about a 100,000 barrels of oil per day for nine days. The grand find created the rise of the Texas oil industry, and the United States of America eventually became the world's leader in oil production

  1. And how SO MUCH the USA depends NOW on oil!
The movie - "Giant" depicted this so well.
I reckon one of the classic movies ever produced in the
    USA.

    1. Sorry to butt in on your conversation with Adam but just had to mention that Giant is one of my all-time favorite movies. I liked Rock Hudson and Liz Taylor both but it was James Dean that stole the show for me. He was awesome in it.

    2. No worries, bj. I am so delighted we agree on something - ha ha.
However please don't use that "over used" word that the young can't stop using in any sentence - AWESOME.
      That word repulses me.
When at even check-outs you give the correct change over which saves them to do simple mathematical calculations, you are greeted with the words - "Oh thank you, that is awesome"!!!
I will delicately refrain from telling you my response but it is bloody "AWESOME" in the TRUE and PROPER meaning of the word.
      Cheers

  4. Who's the leader now? I know I could Google it (and look like a genius), but this is so much better.

    1. Well then GOOGLE!
Russia tops and then Saudi Arabia.
      Now you know.
I put this ignorance and laziness down to the fact that people living above the Equator are rather lazy
and people living below the Equator are far more
inquisitive, intelligent, more travelled (by far) and
      active.
I hope you know what the Equator is?

  7. Like Al, I have a feeling we are not the leader anymore. Based on how much foreign oil prices have us by the balls.

  8. Sure a lot of rich people due to oil in Texas....wish I had a well or two because, sooner or later, the price will come back up.

  9. I don't think people realize that the U.S. does provide a whole lot of oil as it is for our needs.
