Fact of the Day: Leopard Camel

Many in Ancient Greece, and the Roman Republic/Empire had believed that giraffes were some kind of hybrid species of camel and leopard. They even combined the names for animal in coming up for their word for giraffe.

  1. Adam!!!
i don't think there were too many giraffes wandering the streets of ancient Rome, Sparta or Troy etc. in the ancient World?
I don't believe I have ever read of Roman, Greek or Macedonian legions marching across the "Savannas/or correctly spelt Savannahs" of Central Africa.
I dare say when traders captured giraffes and transported the unfortunate beasts to Rome, the Romans may have probably wondered - "WHAT THE BLOOODY HELL do we have here".
    Funny fact of the Day.

  4. I can see how they thought they were a hybrid of the two, but it wouldn't explain their size!
