Fact of the Day: King Cromwell

During the reign of Charles I of England, a large number of people wanted the King to give almost or all of his power to Parliament. Refusing to give up his power, Charles I let a civil war take over England which resulted in his death. Oliver Cromwell abolished the monarchy and became Lord Protector. While he wasn't king, he essentially was a dictator despite supporting a cause to overthrow the king and establish democratic republicanism. While many past and present viewed his rule as very good and very bad, he certainly had far more power than English parliament. He was even addressed as "Your Highness".
