Fact of the Day: Dauphin of France

Like England's Prince of Wales, the heir apparent to the King of France was known as the Dauphin. The word is French for dolphin and the animal was on the coat of arms for the Dauphin of France.

  3. I've always wondered WHY the heir was called a dolphin, though. What significance does that creature hold for the French monarchy?
