Fact of the Day: High Heels

High heels were most likely invented in Ancient Egypt. But their use didn't become a status symbol (for women and men) until the Renaissance in Europe. In France King Louis XIV decreed that only nobles and royals could wear high heels.

  1. In Venice high heels were called chopines and were worn by women to keep their gowns from dragging in water when the streets flooded.
