Fact of the Day: Chinese Emperor Henry

The last Chinese Emperor Puyi was taught English by Scotsman Reginald Johnston and "chose" the English name Henry for himself after reading about the names of past English kings.

  1. Many people from Hong Kong, and China in general, still choose English names for themselves today. I have some friends from there, and I've actually never heard their Chinese names but their English ones are the ones they've used when talking to foreigners. It's really interesting, I think. How you can know somebody for years, without really knowing even their birth name. Thank you for stopping by my blog, and leaving me such a kind comment.

  5. Fascinating. A tragic figure. That film about him "The Last Emperor" was good. He ended up as a gardener in the imperial gardens

  7. Interesting that he chose Henry. I wonder what it was about the name that appealed to him.
