Fact of the Day: Elisabeth of Valois

Elisabeth of Valois was the daughter of King Henry II of France. She was married to King Phillip II of Spain which brought much needed peace to both nations. Despite a considerable age difference, both the King and his new Queen were quite fond of each other. However she had trouble giving birth to children, and died after a miscarriage.

  1. That's horrible to try so hard for a baby only for both to lose their lives in this manner. Hugs...RO

  5. What a sadness that must have caused the royal family.
My grandmother also died in childbirth in 1921. They buried her with the baby in her arms...just sad....

  7. I looked her up after seeing this post. Sounds like Phillip really loved her. She was only 14 when she married him. Wow! Thank goodness she got to love him so much too.
