Japanese Words For the Day: Kitchen Stuff

Chopsticks are Hashi 

Cup is Kappu. The rest including this one are based on the English word. 

Knife is Naifu

Spoon is Supun though it pronounces just the same. 

Table is Teburu

Why do they use so many English words? O_o

Well Japan was so isolated (they never even traded for many years except a little bit with China) for many years that a lot of stuff that didn't already have a symbolic kanji were unknown to them. So a lot of words (think how computer is usually the same no matter what language it is) are based on the English one.
