Fact of the Day: Don't Name The Land After Me

Pennsylvania is named after Sir William Penn after receiving a land grant from King Charles II.  Penn himself objected to the name since he didn't want people thinking he named it after himself. However the king refused to honor his wish of renaming it something different like New Wales.

I'm sure he liked it anyway, just was trying to play it down.

Pennsylvania sounds better than New Wales.

At least his reluctance is recorded. It would be worse if we all assumed that he liked having a state named after him.

i find the fact that he was opposed to the naming a bit refreshing you know...or maybe redeeming...not all out for the glory...
