Fact of the Day: The State of Rhodes

While the state of Rhode Island is mostly mainland, it's naming is unclear. Most give credit to explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano who called one of it's actual islands "Rhode Island" after it reminded him of the Greek island of Rhodes.

I hope that's incorrect! I can't imagine an Italian naming a place after something Greek.
