Fact of the Day: Imaginary Name State

Idaho's name gets credit from a lobbyist by the name of George M. Wiling who gave out the name Idaho after Congress started taking suggestions for land that would later become Colorado. He claimed it was a Shoshone word for "gem of the mountains", but later admitted that he made up the name Idaho himself. The name stuck around, and eventually a whole state took the name.
