Fact of the Day: Not-American Columbia

The Canadian province of British Columbia get it's name from Queen Victoria's choosing after naming the land after the Columbia district. The "British" part was added to make it apparent which part belonged to which country since some of the Columbia district covered parts of America.

  1. Well, that's the best thing they could do to avoid any confusion. Heard a joke one time about an old man and his grandson who were all ready for some warm, holiday sunshine in Sydney, Australia, but ended up in Sydney, Canada instead!

  2. That is interesting indeed, never knew where it got it's name, but then I'm on the other side of the country...haha

  3. Good fact. I bet that would be something they would ask in a trivia contest
