Fact of the Day: Harry Houdini's Real Name

Even the magician Harry Houdini's name itself was an illusion. He was born Erik Weisz in Austria-Hungary but later changed his name to Harry Weiss after his family moved to America.

Rather a common occurrence is changing names, for many reasons. Houdini obviously had a very good reason.

Happy New Year to you.

Oh...another new bit of trivia. I always thought that was his real name!

While the spelling on Houdini's Hungarian birth certificate is "Erik Weisz", the spelling he actually used was Ehrich Weiss. Even as an adult he continued to sign some legal papers as Ehrich Weiss, and would sometimes sign books to family with his real name. Thanks for the post. I run a Houdini blog if you'd like more Harry/Ehrich goodness.
