Fact of the Day: Pollywogs and Shellbacks

In most English-speaking Navies a pollywog is a sailor who has never crossed the equator. Once they do they earn the nickname shellback.

Somehow with today's ships, crossing the equator doesn't seem to be a big deal. Bet back when caravels and galleons sailed the seas it was though.

perhaps, but I think it would be a pretty big deal for the new guys. Some boats never go near the equator, and it still takes a considerable amount of time (to a person) to sail around the world.
