Fact of the Day: Samurai Armor

While the armor of European knights were made of metal and limited mobility, the armor of the samurai in Japan was much different. They were generally made of leather and iron, and were designed to be as lightweight as possible. This allowed the samurai not only the protection of armor, but the mobility and speed to use a sword, a bow, or to ride a horse with ease.

Hmmm. Very interesting. Did you know that one of the things that led to the fall of the Roman Empire may have been armor? As Rome flourished and spent less time in battle, the military became softer and softer, and found the armor grew heavier and heavier, so eventually they stopped training in it. When they were later attacked, many soldiers went into battle without protection, causing them to lose greater amounts of soldiers than before.

Just as western WWII planes were heavy, and armored, while Mitsubishi's famous Zero was light and agile.

I've always thought it must have sucked to have to lug all this stuff around everywhere lol. Lightweight iron would have been the way to go for sure.
