Like humans, birds can navigate long journeys from mental maps and using the stars. Unlike humans, birds can also sense the Earth's magnetism which they use to help themselves migrate.

the real question is how conscious are they of their ability? do they just kinda feel they're working in the right direction or is it like looking at a map and having a giant arrow painted on it pointing in the right direction.

I did not know that. I was just at the beach and I loved watching the birds fly around. I kept thinking if I were a bird, I'd want to stay at the beach all year!
