Fact of the Day: Extinct Bear

The California grizzly gear appears in the state's flag, and is their official state mammal. Despite this, the California grizzly bear has been extinct since about 1924. Their demise was mostly the fault of European settlers.

It takes a certain amount of gall to use on your state flag an animal that you drove to extinction, doesn't it?

Really, that's not good if none are left.
Same happened here to the Tasmanian Tiger, was hunted till none are left, but that was years ago.

I live in Oregon and I believe there's a beaver on the State flag. I've never seen a beaver in Oregon.
