Fact of the Day: London Yard

The police agency known as Scotland Yard is commonly portrayed in fiction set in England. Despite it's name, Scotland Yard is located nowhere in Scotland or anywhere else besides London, England.

Although I knew this, I still don't know why they call it Scotland Yard.

Scotland yard is the name of the short alley that runs next to the police station. Everyone got in the habit of saying, "Let's go to Scotland Yard, or Take the crook to Scotland Yard," indicating which station house.

Ironically they moved the police station but decided to keep calling it by that name. I don't remember the name of the street they moved to, but the alley still exists, named "Scotland Yard," as always.
