When Mazie Hirono was elected to the Senate in 2012, she became a lot of "firsts" in American democracy. She is Hawaii's first female senator, the first Asian-American woman in the Senate, the first Senator born in Japan, and America's first Buddhist senator.

We're quite happy with Mazie and proud of her. We're not thrilled about Tulsi Gabbard right now.

This is not entirely related, but the last time we were in Hawaii we visited a gorgeous Buddhist temple on Oahu island. Your post reminded me of it!
