In many early human civilizations, doors were once considered an "entryway" to the afterlife. Doors in important places were often decorated with local religious symbols.
There's a painting with Jesus inside and somebody's knocking on the door outside. Except there's no door handle inside. Only the man could let himself in. I'd like to get that as a poster...

True. Most interesting are doors especially to older buildings.
