Fact of the Day: United Arab Republic

From 1958-1961 Syria and Egypt united as one country as the United Arab Republic. The union would be short-lived for many reasons. An obvious one being that Syria and Egypt despite being close-by do not share any borders.

It was formed to obliterate Israel.
As if it had any hope, the Syrians and the Egyptians
except for being Arabic countries have nothing in common
and neither trusts the other.
Syria at present is the pariah of the Middle East.
