Fact of the Day: Bride Burning

Bride burning is a practice that occurs often in or around India. A bride is brutally murdered through burning by the husband and/or his family after the bride's family refuses to give out additional dowry.

I've been to India and this was discussed as a practice that is extremely rare. Still, it's horrible.

One hears in so many different countries how women are persecuted and even if this is rare, it still happens and that is abhorrent

Just barbaric and depraved! And then there was the practice of Sati (also called suttee) where a pious widow was expected to sacrifice herself on her husband's funeral pyre, although some widows were buried alive with the husband's corpse or drowned ~ all justified by religion, of course, and a convenient way to get rid of the inconvenient widow.
