A city with quite an interesting, intriguing, brutal and I suppose for historians a fascinating history, but I would suspect that today it would not be on the tourist trail.
Some of the WW1 history is well done in the movie, "Lawrence of Arabia".

I just can't help but think about the history and art being destroyed there

I am very sad to think of all the archeological wonders being destroyed in the Syrian civil war. And just to be clear, sadder for the tragic loss of human life.
