Fact of the Day: Viking Helmets

While Vikings are typically portrayed wearing helmets with horns, that is pretty much pure myth as they never wore them especially as they could be a disadvantage in battle. The myth started around the 19th century and carried on to today.

  1. Guess someone wanted them to look cooler

  2. Knew this one, Adam! The Vikings were quite the culture. One of my favorite things ever was visiting the World Heritage Viking site L'anse aux Meadows on the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula in Newfoundland.

  3. I knew about this one. The myth continues, though.

  4. Vikinngs wearing helmets with horns was began as a costume design for Wagner operas. You're right that Vikings never wore them.

  5. If you want to find out find out everything about the Vikings
go to Norway and visit this place:
It is an eye opener on myths and what was real.
It is a full day tour with a real life Viking village included.

Stephen above is right. Wagner loved them and their helmets in his operas! I believe Herr Hitler was intrigued by it also.

  6. So funny! I wonder, also, if it really isn't over until the fat lady sings. Is that, too, a myth?

  7. Your blog is very useful for me.I really like you post. Thanks for sharing.
