Fact of the Day: Roman Catholic Abolitionists

Since The Bible has many passages that endorse slavery, it took quite some time for the majority of Christians to object to it on moral grounds. Even a centralized religious body like the Roman Catholic Church took until the 17th century to formally condemn slavery.

Like you say, this was just a formalization. The church has been against slavery long before the seventeenth century.

Unfortunately slavery is still a reality in our troubled world.
