Fact of the Day: Ukraine WWII Deaths

Very much like Poland, Ukraine was a major disaster area during World War II after being stuck between Germany and Russia, though it was part of the Soviet Union. For many reasons, it's estimated that about 1 out of every 6 Ukrainians did not survive the war.

And this, after coming through the Holodomor of the 1930s when millions starved.

How horrible. We don't hear about that part of the war most times.

Must have been such a devastating period in history that should never have to happen again.

Not a country you hear a lot about regarding WWII. Just terrible how much devastation was caused worldwide.

Initially the Ukrainians welcomed the Germans as liberators from the tyranny of Stalin.
I might add that the Ukrainians who joined the Nazi war machine were all in the sadistic elements of the Waffen SS and concentration camp guards.
A little more checking of this part of WW2 would have been advisable. Wasn't there a furore in the USA a few years ago regarding the extradition of a war criminal of Ukrainian extraction to the tribunal in The Hague??
