Fact of the Day: Many Vincent Van Goghs

Vincent Van Gogh shared the same name as an older brother who died exactly a year before he was born from stillbirth. Both were named after their grandfather.

Yes! And lets not forget...
Van Gogh was unsuccessful during his lifetime, and was considered a madman and a failure. He became famous after his suicide, and exists in the public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood genius...

Well, we all know who became the most famous one!

I had no idea. I find it very peculiar that parents name a child after another one that died, they are different individuals, they deserve their own name...

Well, one dies, the other one looks like he can carry on the same name.

I knew he had a brother named Theo, but not another with the same name.

We were in the Netherlands and went to the Van Gogh Museum. It was very interesting to learn about his life. His beloved brother Theo died six months after him, probably from heartbreak. I’ve heard of another theory that he couldn’t have killed himself, that it was probably a mistake because he was shot in the stomach at a strange angle.
