Fact of the Day: Closely Amish

Since virtually all the Amish descend from most founders of the faith from centuries back, they suffer from different diseases more often than other people due to the lack of variety in the gene-pool. Such diseases include Angelman syndrome, dwarism, and several different metabolic disorders.

Also true of insular Mormon Fundamentalist communities (not to be confused with mainstream Mormons), and some Muslim groups in which first-cousin marriages are customary.

Funny how God doesn't seem interested in protecting such devout people from these sad genetic effects.
