While most of the middle to western part of the present-day United States belonged eventually to Spain as New Spain, present-day California was also claimed by Sir Francis Drake for Queen Elizabeth I of England, though no real control ever came of it.

Everybody wants California:D
All wanted the sunshine and earth quakes and fires
I had thought Holland had them. Thanks for your information.
He took over quite a rather large span of land! The Spanish were just as brutal as us back in the "finding America" days.
I did not know that!
California for Frank Drake, nice one Frank.
Interesting.
I didn't know that and I'm from California. lol
Cool info
I suppose it was too far of a stretch for English colonists to settle in California. No easy way to get from England to there. Good.
