We had a burro that was about 20 years old when we got her...and she lived a long healthy life.

I figured about that much. I wish cats and dogs lived that long.

According to veterinarians, horses can live up to, if cared for perfectly, 30 years quite regularly but from about 20 years they are susceptible to bone fractures.
My grandfather had a gelding which lived a hearty life till 35 years.
Actually good old "Siren" was the horse I learnt to ride on, I was about 4 years of age. The "old bugger" certainly didn't take much notice of a "whipper-snapper" like me. He moved when he felt like it, despite my desperate urgings.
The poor old fellow had to be put down humanely as he had lost all his teeth.

Seems Adam you have non-rural followers from the above comments!
