Inspired by the jesters of European royalty/nobility, clowns as a modern "artform" didn't appear until the 18th century but didn't stabilize in what exactly made a "clown" until the 20th century.
That picture looks like Emmett Kelly a very famous clown who always looked sad. He was a witness to that horrible circus fire, Hartford Circus Fire where over 160 people died. The only t8me he was seen crying.

Clowns were creepy to me some decades ago. Never knew their origin.
