Fact of the Day: Marine

The English word marine came via the Old French words marine and marin. The Old French words came from the Latin word mare which means "sea".

Latin was a requirement for me to enter university. Mine was, perhaps, the last freshman class that had to have Latin. I've forgotten almost everything; but I do know how much impact it has had on English and other languages.
