If the term "Panama hat" was coined in America (and I don't know that it was), the proximity of that country to the USA, as well as building of the canal, might be the reason for the name. Americans went down to work down on the canal, and saw people wearing those hats. Just a guess, that's all.

I went to find out the answer. It took a while, but I got it. I prefer the name JipiJapa. That sounds happy and fun like the hats they are.
