Fact of the Day: First Female Senator

Rebecca Felton of Georgia served as the country's first female senator. She was appointed in a honorary act (her husband had a career in politics) and only served for one day, as such. Unfortunately, Rebecca Felton was a terrible person. She had owned slavers prior to the civil war, and was incredibly racist to the end of her life.
