Photo: Archelon Fossil Ripley's' Aquarium of the Smokies

They had this extinct turtle hanging near the entrance. The archelon was the largest turtle ever known and it lived in the late Cretaceous period, so it hung out with the last of the dinosaurs.

Wow, it's hard to imagine sometimes that some of these animals ever got so darn big.

Too bad they are extinct. I've always been fascinated with turtles and this one would have been fun to see in the wild.
