Things I Like: Gerudo Valley (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate)

Since it came out first for Smash 4 on 3DS, this was my first time with the stage. It's based on the region of the Gerudo people from Ocarina of Time. My favorite game of all time.

Photos: Sega Genesis Mini (Carolina Arcade Museum)

This was the first thing Daisy played at the Carolina Arcade Museum. It's not really an arcade machine, but rather a new Sega Genesis mini console that digitally plays many of the old games.

Photos: LIttle R at Her Cousin's 6th Birthday Party

My 2nd youngest niece Little R got to see her other cousins have their co-birthday party. I had not realized how big she's gotten. The last thing I recalled, she was still just a baby.

Fact of the Day: Edmund Ironside Toilet

King Edmund Ironside was one of the last kings of England from the House of Wessex. His cause of death is disputed, but a popular story was that he was assassinated with a blade from an assassin hiding under his privy.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu (2019 Film) Review

When I was ten years old, I didn't know much about the newest video games until at least a few months later. But one day after a baseball game, my teammates were playing Pokemon Red/Blue on their Game Boys. The game looked so much fun and I had to get it. Now over twenty years later, I still consider myself a Poke-fan. I saw the trailer for Pokemon Detective Pikachu several times last year and this year, but I ended up missing it when it came out to theaters. I had to wait on the library reserve list to get to me, but I finally got a chance to see it on Blu-Ray. They actually based most of the film's plot on the 3DS game of the same name, which I didn't get to play.

Things I Like: Palutena (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate)

Palutena might have seemed like an odd choice for Smash 4, but the series creator also made Kid Icarus: Uprising which helped modernize her character. She returns for Smash Ultimate, and she's one of my favorites. In the Kid Icarus games, she's the goddess of light and Pit's boss of sorts...kind of.

Photos: Defender: Stargate (Carolina Arcade Museum)

Like the other Williams game, I had played Defender on a classic disk on PS1. I had not realized I was playing the sequel, rather than the original here in Forest City NC's Carolina Arcade Museum.

Photo: Little CR at Her First Birthday Party

While it was more for her older sister, this birthday party was hers too.

UglyDolls (2019 Film) Review

I had no idea this movie even existed until recently. I always try to see movies when they're new. And my local library had a decent wait for the Blu-Ray which I took as a good sign. But I honestly had no idea what the movie was even about. And the cover didn't really excite me either. Looked rather bland, generic, and boring. But was I wrong, or were my fears about the movie right? Let's see...

Fact of the Day: Dog Food

It is recommended that a dog should be fed only twice a day, with early morning and late at night being the preferred times to fill up the dog food bowl.

Things I Hate: Flint Marko/Sandman (Spider-Man 3)

Sandman was never my favorite villain in Spider-Man lore. He's an odd choice for Spider-Man to fight and this version didn't help my opinion of the character.

Once Upon a Time (TV Series) Season 7 Review

One of my favorite shows is Once Upon a Time, though I will admit, it's not been a pretty last batch of seasons for the show. While ABC dropped the ball with its spinoff Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (only based on what I heard), Once Upon a Time proved to be too popular for them to get rid of easily. Like for example, Rumplestiltskin should have died at the end of season three, while we all loved him, it meant so much to his character for him to have stayed gone. This last season was an attempt for a soft reboot, as it tries to mimic the first season in different ways while being an obvious sequel to the other seasons.

Photos: LIttle K's 6th Birthday Party

I missed out on this one (had to work) but my brother had both of his daughters have their birthday party at Cleveland Park in Spartanburg, with most of the party happening under the gazebo. Since Little CR is one now, it was more or less all Little K's event. This was also the first birthday party that Little K got to invite her friends from school, which is something I never got to do as a kid.

Photos: SNES Classic Mini (Carolina Arcade Museum)

Unlike the NES Classic Mini, the SNES Classic Mini had one game that was brand new...sort of. I'm talking about Star Fox 2 which was 100% made but Nintendo pulled the plug because its simple 3D graphics were a joke in 1995 in comparison to the Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation.

Fact of the Day: Nectarine Peach

Botanically, peaches and nectarines are the same type of fruit. Peaches just have a fuzz to them, while nectarines don't.

Things I Like: J. Jonah Jameson (Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy)

J.K. Simmons nailed this role so good that I don't think Marc Webb wanted to try to touch it in the next era of films.

Sonic Forces (Nintendo Switch) Review

Sonic the Hedgehog was arguably as big or bigger than Nintendo's Mario back in the 1990's. But by 2019, Sega's blue hedgehog had fallen awfully behind the red plumber. For example, Super Mario Odyssey was a huge hit on the Nintendo Switch where many still keeping talking about it today. Sonic Forces...not so much. I've heard many fans talk bad about it but I wanted to give it a chance. As I haven't played a 3D Sonic game in a few years. While I had the Nintendo Switch version, it's also on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Photo: NES Classic Mini (Carolina Arcade Museum)

They had one of these digital systems that recreated the old NES and its games at the Carolina Arcade Museum. When Nintendo made these things not long ago, places couldn't keep them on the shelves. But Daisy played this more than I.

Photos: Raccoon and Zebra Birthday Gifts For Nieces

My nieces have close birthdays so they celebrated it together this year. My 1 year old niece Little CR got this zebra jingle drum. She liked it, but it falls over a little too easy.

Fact of the Day: Oldest City in the 50 States

St. Augustine is the oldest city in the borders of the fifty states of the United States of America. It was founded in 1565.

Things I Like: Kid Buu (Dragon Ball FighterZ)

Since Dragon Ball FighterZ takes place during the Dragon Ball Super timeline, Kid Buu isn't really in the story. Since his soul was reincarnated as Uub, only a clone could be created.

Photos: Donkey Kong 3 (Carolina Arcade Museum)

Here's one most gamers forgot at the Carolina Arcade Museum in Forest City, North Carolina. I'm speaking of Donkey Kong 3, the first Nintendo sequel nobody wanted. It was the first Donkey Kong game to not have Mario as a main character. Instead you play as Stanley the Bugman, whom apparently has no ties to Mario.

Photo: My Mother's Old Portrait

My mother got this from my grandmother the other day. This was a portrait done of her when she was young, which I found odd since we live in the age of photographs and I could not imagine her staying still for an artist. Apparently they took a photo and the artist did his work based on that.

Fact of the Day: Ancient Racing

Racing as a sport has been around for about as long as human history. Obvious art of it has been found on Greek pottery and chariot racing was described in Homer's Iliad.

Things I Like: Ganon (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate)

Ganon was an obvious pick for a real boss in the new Smash Bros. Ultimate in both Classic Mode and World of Light. I was glad they based him off of his Ocarina of Time "pig-form" which gamers saw at the finale of the N64 classic.

Downton Abbey (2019 Film) Review

One of my favorite TV series was Downton Abbey, which is more recent as it only ended a few years ago. But luckily, they decided to make a movie. And not just any movie, a real movie for the silver-screen instead of one made just for television. I was expecting a lackluster audience showing, given that the TV series wasn't as popular in the United States as many others, but boy was I wrong. It's on the top of the box office this weekend, and even seeing the movie at 10:30 on a Tuesday morning, we were lucky to get good seats.

Photos: Donkey Kong Jr. (Carolina Arcade Museum)

Right next to the original Donkey Kong arcade game was Donkey Kong Jr. This actually had you as Donkey Kong's son, and you try to free your dad from Mario. The only Nintendo game where Mario is a bad guy. Good or bad is all a matter of perspective.

Photo: Grandma Mining at Greenville Gemstone Mine (Haywood Mall)

The nearby mall has a gemstone/fossil place and in the back of the place there is a little center where you can "mine" by panning for who knows what you'd find. My grandmother did so while out with my mother recently. I'm assuming she didn't find anything life-changing.

Fact of the Day: Saint Lawrence the Funny

Saint Lawerence is a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, who was apparently a martyr during the days of the Roman Emperor Valerian. He had made the Roman leadership so angry that they apparently roasted him until his demise. After much agony, Saint Lawrence allegedly told the Romans to flip him over and he was well done on that side. He is considered the patron saint of cooks, chefs, and comedians.

Things I Like: Paper Mario Stage (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate)

This was one was new to me, as it was only in Smash 4 on 3DS (I had it on WiiU) but I do like it. It's based more on Paper Mario: Sticker Star than any other of the other games in the spinoff RPG series. While I missed that 3DS Paper Mario game, I can see the Paper Mario style easily. You first fight near a windmill.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019 Film) Review

About five years ago, I enjoyed the 2nd attempted reboot of an American-produced Godzilla film. Along with Kong: Skull Island, Warner Bros wants to create a fantastic movie universe (like Disney's MCU with all the Marvel characters) known as the Monsters Universe. Typically studios should have a movie every one or two years to keep interest going, because I wasn't super excited to see this 2nd film King of the Monsters when it came out in theaters earlier this May.

Photos: Donkey Kong Arcade (Carolina Arcade Museum)

I was a bit excited to try this one out. It's a big piece of Nintendo history. Before Donkey Kong, Nintendo was a rather unknown and rather mediocre video game maker who made a few ripoffs than their own truly original work.

Photo: The Funny Whoopee Cushion

My mom took this photo of my brother Zach making the whoopie cushion make noises in front of my niece Little CR. She isn't a tough critic to make laugh, so I'm sure she thought it was funny.

Fact of the Day: Scottish Peppers

Scotch bonnet peppers get their name from the Scottish hats due to the shape of the peppers resembling the hats.

Things I Like: Greninja (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate)

Greninja was around for Smash 4, and he originated in the Pokemon series. In Pokemon X/Y (3DS) he was the final evolution of the water starter Froakie. I actually chose the fire starter for those games, so I don't really remember Greninja in the games itself.

My Kirby's Dreamland 3 (SNES) Impressions

Kirby is one of my favorite series, but I always wonder why I never heard about Kirby's Dreamland 3 until many years later. It came out in 1997, this was a year after the N64 launched and a year before Ocarina of Time. This could had worked for the GameBoy or even for the later Game Boy Color, but it certainly was overshadowed by almost everything by coming out on the Super Nintendo. I tried to play it years ago, but I never could find a version. But now certain Super Nintendo games can be played on the Nintendo Switch and this was one of them.

Photo: Robotron 2084 (Carolina Arcade Museum)

Like Joust, Robotron 2084 was another Williams game I played on a collection disk on PS1. I liked it more than Joust from what I remember.

Photo: Danny the Cat in the Shoe Rack

My mother recently got a new shoe rack. Or as her cat Danny calls it, his new couch.

Photos: Fixing Damaged Drywall Above TV in Bedroom

We had a mirror on our dresser that was heavy and rested against the wall. As soon as I took it down for the last time, it took some drywall off with it... Which was... annoying.
It's a simple fix. I used Dap's Fast N Final lightweight spackling. It's pretty neat stuff, you don't even have to sand the spackle down.
I remembered the color, Bayberry Blue (790) by Benjamin Moore so that wasn't an issue. The walls were painted in semi-gloss, but the little sample jar of paint I used for this touch-up was in satin. It's just a tiny little spot so I doubt I could tell.
If you really look at it, you can tell, but otherwise, it's fine.

Fact of the Day: Sapphire Tough

Among naturally made minerals, sapphires are among the hardest on the Mohs scale. The only natural mineral that can scratch it is a diamond.

Things I Like: Gwen Stacy (Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3)

I thought Gwen Stacy was a rather odd character to mix into Spider-Man 3. In the comics, she was Peter Parker's first major girlfriend, and her death shattered him greatly. In this one, the two had never really met before.

My Sonic Forces (Nintendo Switch) Impressions

During the 1990's, Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog was among the best of the best. Now his games are questionable at best. While we've had a few good Sonic games in the last decade, we've had plenty of bad ones too. I had decent hopes for Sonic Forces, so I borrowed it from my local library. I have the Nintendo Switch version but it's also out on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Photos: Joust (Carolina Arcade Museum)

Joust is a game I remember from a collection disk on PS1 that my brother Brandon had. We didn't have many games in our youth, so I spent a lot of time with Joust. It was made by Williams, a company now more famous for their pinball machines. They also made Defender, which had a PS2/Xbox/Gamecube revival, but by 2002, Williams didn't make video games anymore and they handed it off to Midway.

Photos: Getting a New Smart TV

Right before my birthday, we went and I got a new TV. We have one of the living room, but not for our bedroom. We went about three years without one, before we both wanted one in both rooms. I had it on hold hours before.

Fact of the Day: Squid Heart

Squids have three hearts. One for the main part of the body (like most animals) and two mainly for their gills.

Things I Like: Harry Osborn (Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy)

Harry Osborn was one of my favorite characters in the trilogy, though he had his ups and downs. He's the son of Norman Osborn, the president of Oscorp and the soon-to-be Green Goblin. Unlike his father, he seems to struggle with school as a young man.

Photos: Original Ms. Pac-Man Machine (Carolina Arcade Museum)

Right after Pac-Man, I jumped over to Ms. Pacman at the Carolina Arcade Museum in Forest City, North Carolina. This one actually does improve on the original, which is the reason why you see it more often at bowling alleys and pizza places versus the original. It actually wasn't really a Namco idea.
