During the 1990's, Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog was among the best of the best. Now his games are questionable at best. While we've had a few good Sonic games in the last decade, we've had plenty of bad ones too. I had decent hopes for Sonic Forces, so I borrowed it from my local library. I have the Nintendo Switch version but it's also out on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
The game is mostly 3D, taking the cue from the Sonic Adventure games, but certainly different. It at least plays better than Sonic 06', one of the worst games in the series by far.
The story certainly is different. It goes dystopian where Dr. Eggman and the bad guys win over Sonic, and the world is in despair without him. I much prefer a happier Sonic game. Especially one that doesn't force me to create my own bland Sonic clone of a character.
I did like seeing some real deal 2D levels, but even these are lacking in depth. It certainly can't compare to something like the Genesis games or even the Sonic Advance games on GBA.
So I don't have too high of hopes for this one. I honestly wished Sega had more pride about backing their literal mascot and their reason they became as big as they were in the past.
